1. Tenczyn Castle in Rudno - a fortress on an ancient volcanic cone

Over 300 million years ago, the lands of our country were near the equator. In the area around Krakow and Lower Silesia, volcanoes and cracks in the Earth's crust appeared, from which boiling lava flowed. Located about 36 kilometers west of Krakow, the ruins of Tenczyn Castle in Rudno stand on an ancient volcanic cone.

The rocks around the castle hide extraordinary treasures! In the bubbles of solidifying lava, beautiful crystals sometimes form. Sometimes these are agates - colorful varieties of the mineral chalcedony. Agates can be found in the local fields, but... they are not easy to spot! Although they are beautiful inside, from the outside they look like ordinary stones.

2. The most beautiful caves around Krakow: Ciemna, Wierzchowska, and Nietoperzowa

About 10,000 years ago, our country was covered in ice! The ice sheet, which today is only at the poles, once reached as far as the Tatra Mountains! Traces of the ice age can be found in the caves near Krakow. In the Nietoperzowa Cave, teeth and bones of animals from the ice age were found, as well as traces of hearths and tools from the Stone Age. During the extraction of bat droppings, 4,000 cave bear fangs were discovered here! You can meet hibernating bats here, although most bats hibernate in the Ciemna Cave.
