Getting to and Accessing the Cave

The cave is located on the route from Krakow to Olkusz. When driving towards Olkusz, in the village of Bia艂y Ko艣ci贸艂, turn left (there is a signpost for the cave) and continue until you reach the parking area in the village of Wierzchowie. At the market square in Wierzchowie, you will find a partially fenced playground, a grocery store, and a large covered shelter with tables and benches, toilets (portable). From the market square, it's about 800 meters to the cave. First, we walk along the side of the asphalt road, and then on a comfortable sidewalk. The road leads along the edge of the forest, providing pleasant shade.

Wierzchowska Cave

This is the largest cave in the Krakow area and the Krak贸w Upland. Wierzchowska Cave has the longest tourist route among all the caves in Poland! In winter, you can see bats here - small ones that hang from the cave ceiling and resemble dried plums. During archaeological excavations, fragments of vessels, tools, and traces of fire were found inside. The cave is visited with a guide, and the tour lasts about 40 minutes. The temperature inside is only 8 degrees Celsius, so remember to wear warm clothing and good shoes (it's wet and can be slippery!). In addition to the characteristic cave formations found in the Jura region, you will also see reconstructions of cave animals such as bears, lions, and hyenas, as well as exhibitions of fossils and animal bones. At the end, a surprise awaits you - a meeting with a cave explorer!

Practical Information:

The cave is illuminated, but for the comfort of your child, you can bring a small flashlight. The corridors can be narrow, but it is possible to pass with a child in your arms or in a carrier. Due to protruding rocks, we recommend front carriers and tied wraps (carrying the child on your back may accidentally hit something). The route is about 700 meters long, with a fairly even surface covered with small stones. In some halls, there are stairs with railings for entering and exiting - with the help of an adult, even a 2-3-year-old can manage it.

One of the great advantages of Wierzchowska Cave is its relatively low popularity! It is slightly off the beaten path from the Ojc贸w National Park area, making it a more intimate and less crowded experience. Even on weekends and holidays, there are no crowds or queues, and the tours are conducted in small groups - a much more comfortable situation compared to the crowded 艁okietek Cave!
