Szczawnica as a health resort

About 200 years ago in the Pieniny Mountains, healing acidic mineral water springs were discovered, which the highlanders called 'sorrels'. Around them, the first houses and spa parks were built. The creator of the health resort named Szczawnica was Józef Szalay. Szczawnica quickly became a place where the most famous Poles, including Jan Matejko, Cyprian Kamil Norwid, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Bolesław Prus, Maria Konopnicka, used to come. To this day, there is a mineral water drinking house here.

Szalay's coats of arms

People from all over Poland and even from abroad came to the spa in Szczawnica. While strolling through the streets of Szczawnica, it's worth paying attention to the old house signs. Initially, such signs marked houses that rented rooms for spa guests. The name 'Szalay's coats of arms' comes from the surname of Józef Szalay, who invented this way of marking houses and painted many of them himself.
