The Pienińska Droga is the most popular walking and cycling route along the Dunajec Gorge, from Szczawnica to the village of Czerwony Klasztor in Slovakia. In Czerwony Klasztor, there is a stony beach and meadow that offers the most beautiful view of the Three Crowns!
- Route length: 12 km
- In Szczawnica, at the beginning of the route, there are many bike rental shops. Bikes with trailers or child seats are available. In some rental shops, you can return the bike in Sromowce NiĹĽne.
- The first 4 km have a comfortable sidewalk and asphalt bike path. Then, the route becomes stony but still wide.
- The entire route is not flat. There is a slight incline halfway through. It is possible to overcome it with a stroller or bike, but it may be less comfortable.
- There is no railing by the river, and sometimes there are downhill slopes. This route is suitable for children who can already ride a bike well.
Pieniny Road - Comfortable Sidewalk
This easy route with no significant terrain inclines leads us along the Dunajec for about 4 km from Szczawnica to the Szczawnica-Lesnica border crossing. Dogs are not allowed on the Polish side. This part of the route is excellent for strollers, people with disabilities, and cyclists. You can continue the comfortable stroller and bike route by turning towards Lesnicky Potok - a rocky ravine where you can visit the Pienińska Chata restaurant.
Pieniny Road - Gravel Section
After the border crossing, the Pieniny Road becomes gravelly and stony with larger changes in terrain elevation. However, it is still possible (although not easy!) to pass through with a stroller and bike. It may be challenging for younger or inexperienced cyclists and can be dangerous as it runs close to the river without a railing.
Czerwony Klasztor (Red Monastery)
At the end of the trail, there is a vast meadow with a picturesque view of the Three Crowns. Across the bridge, you will find the famous Czerwony Klasztor (Red Monastery) which houses a museum and is associated with the legend of the flying monk Cyprian. Near the monastery, you can find small food stands offering snacks and sweets. There is also a restaurant within the monastery or a few hundred meters further along the Dunajec.
