A forest older than many city monuments

The history of Cygański Las goes back more than 700 years and is closely connected with the beginnings of Bielsko. It is one of the oldest documented places connected with the city. The first document about Cygański Las comes from 1312, and it is also the oldest surviving written mention of Bielsko. In the Middle Ages, Duke Mieszko of Cieszyn gave the forest to the townspeople. For many centuries, it was a source of wood and income.

At the end of the 19th century, Cygański Las became a fashionable leisure area. Elegant walking paths, restaurants, guesthouses, and shelters were built here. People even compared it to parks in Vienna. Beautiful summer villas were also built nearby for wealthy factory owners from Bielsko.

A tram used to run to the forest. In 1895, a tram line to Cygański Las was opened. At that time, it was a symbol of modern city life and helped make the forest a favorite place for local people to relax.

Where does the name come from?

The name can be misleading. Despite a common belief, it probably does not come from the Roma people. Most likely, it comes from the German word "Ziegenwald", meaning "Goat Forest". Over time, the Polish form became the official name of this place.

We make a loop to the viewpoint and return on the yellow trail

To avoid returning the same way, we walked over to the yellow trail. However, this trail is more natural, uneven, and steep in some places.

If you want an easy route, it is best to stay near the green trail.
