Caves in Krakow and the Krakow Area
Labyrinths of rocky corridors, which we cautiously navigate with a flashlight in hand... The Krakow area is rich in caves, grottoes, and rocky hideouts - some of which we explore with a guide for a fee, but there are quite a few that are "open". It's worth taking a good flashlight on the trip. The list of open caves below consists mostly of rocky grottoes, but soon we plan to describe ones where you'll have to squeeze through and crawl!
Dragon's Den beneath Wawel Castle
This cave is located in the heart of Krakow, and according to ancient legends, it used to give the former residents sleepless nights due to the fire-breathing dragon. The cave of the Wawel dragon is a place that every little tourist would want to visit! To see it, we have to climb up Wawel Hill, and the exit from the cave leads to the Vistula boulevards, right below the dragon monument.

The cave is open for independent exploration, but it is difficult and requires some agility. It is advisable to have a headlamp as the cave, although short, can get completely dark in the middle section.

Exhibition on Caves in the AGH Krakow Building
An interesting exhibition on karst processes, which is the dissolution of rocks by water containing carbon dioxide (the way most caves in the Krakow area were formed), is located on the ground floor of the main AGH building in Krakow at Mickiewicza Avenue 30, and it is free to visit during the university's opening hours.
At the exhibition, you can see cave pearls and take a look inside a stalactite and stalagmite. Forming stalactites have the shape of a thin tube with water dripping through its center. Minerals precipitate around the falling droplet, gradually building up the stalactite. On the exhibition's cross-sections, you can see its individual layers, and a cave stalactite grows by 1mm every 25 years! The exhibition also features cross-sections of stalactites stained with smoke from a bonfire, which can provide information about our ancient ancestors inhabiting the caves.
