Mogielica - as the highest peak of the Island Beskids, considered part of the crown of Polish mountains - is known for its stories about the former bandits who supposedly hid a pot of ducats and stolen church silver here. During World War II, it served as a hiding place for partisans and a drop-off point for supplies. Nearby, a German fighter plane crashed.
Today, everyone wants to see the panoramic view of the area from the new observation tower:
Yellow trail to Mogielica
This trail is an alternative to the quite steep, tiring, and heavily exposed green trail from Rydza 艢mig艂ego Pass - although it offers less scenic views. The main downside is the lack of designated parking at the trailhead. You either have to walk about 1.5 km east from the pass or try to park by the road.
Starting point of the yellow trail to Mogielica
Unfortunately, it is not well-marked. When coming from Rydza 艢mig艂ego Pass, you need to turn right just after the small bridge. There is a small information board about the Papal trails.
Initially, the trail follows a paved road among the last buildings and gradually enters the forest. Passing by a water intake point, we have to cross a concrete passage over a shallow stream (without a bridge). After crossing a small clearing with a birch cross (the site of a skirmish between partisans and SS men):
...we enter the forest and this time we have to jump from stone to stone to cross a stream.
In the forest, the path becomes narrower and steeper, but there are also flat sections from time to time.
We reach a vast meadow with old, wild apple trees. On the information board, we can read about the former Forester's Lodge of J贸zef Misiura and the base of the partisans.
Ahead of us is a rather steep climb through a forest ravine. Fortunately, it is not very long. After reaching a wide paved road, it is worth turning a few meters to the right - there is a table with benches. On the left side, there is the site of a German fighter plane crash from World War II.
However, the yellow trail crosses the road straight ahead and ascends to the ridge. After the climb, a pleasant path along the ridge awaits us until the final, not very long ascent to the summit.
Mogielica Summit
At the summit, there are several benches, a stamp box, and... a new observation tower!
For more views, we can descend a bit lower to the Papal Cross or to Stumorgowa Glade.
Return the same way or, for a change, take the green trail that leads directly to Rydza 艢mig艂ego Pass. Choosing the green trail offers many more views along the way but also involves a long steep descent on loose stones...
