A small museum in a quaint town, where a fascinating tale of Poland's early independence era awaits. Note: not just for military enthusiasts!
What will we see in the MDLot aviation museum in Puck?
The Maritime Aviation Squadron Museum is housed in a small building, all exhibits are gathered in one room. These are mainly mini models of airplanes, but also a carefully made model of the air base in Puck.
The gigantic airplane propellers are quite impressive!
Maritime Aviation Squadron Museum - attractions
However, this museum is not just about viewing exhibits! The biggest attraction is meeting the host, Mr. Krzysztof, who has a whole lot of stories prepared for us!
So, we sit on a comfortable chair and listen attentively not only about Puck's seaplanes, but also about the town itself, its ancient history, and about how Poland's 'wedding to the sea' really looked like.
The stories are illustrated with archival photos and films.
...and if we ask, Mr. Krzysztof will tell us and show us how a group of enthusiasts retrieved a sunken seaplane engine from the bottom of the bay (which we can see in the museum).
Visiting the Maritime Aviation Squadron Museum - information
The museum is about a 10 min. walk from the Market Square in Puck, 15 min from the PKP station. We can leave the car right at the museum, or in a large parking lot in front of the Municipal Office (free on weekends).
We can easily enter the building with a stroller (no stairs). There is a souvenir shop at the cash desk.
The museum organizes various events, reconstructions, etc. Updates on the FB >>> page of the Historical Association MDLot in Puck.
Polish seaplanes - trivia
- Polish naval aviators flew on French seaplanes and the Polish design Lublin R VIII bis
- What did Polish seaplanes look like and how did they fly? You'll see, among others, in the pre-war romance with the construction of Gdynia in the background "Rhapsody of the Baltic" from 1935. We recommend!
- Seaplanes flew not only in Puck, but also in the area of Pinsk (today's Belarus), where they performed perfectly on the marshy and wetlands of Polesie
- All Puck seaplanes were destroyed: bombed and sunk in the Puck Bay in the first days of September 1939, their wrecks are still underwater in the area of Puck and the Hel Peninsula
- Today in the military, carrier-based aircraft based on aircraft carriers are more reliable. Seaplanes are used by private companies and state services rather on rivers and lakes in areas where there are no airports. Firefighting seaplanes are also popular, used to extinguish forest fires.
- The float of one of the seaplanes (retrieved from the waters of Puck Bay) can be seen today in the Naval Museum in Gdynia
