The Legend of the Krak Mound

Where did the Krak Mound in Podg贸rze come from?

The Legend of the Krak Mound

When the great king Krak (also known as Krakus) died, who founded the city of Krakow at the foot of Wawel Hill, the beloved people held a magnificent funeral for him. The king was buried near Wawel, on the other side of the Vistula River, on Lasota Hill.

People brought soil to the king's grave in whatever they could: in the soles of their shoes, and most often in wide, puffy sleeves, as that was the fashion at the time. So much soil was brought that the Krak Mound was built, where a magnificent feast was held. During the celebration, the elders would throw boiled eggs, shoemaker's pancakes, bagels, rolls, apples, and gingerbread from the top of the mound directly into the hands of the peasants and poor people below.

And so, the Krak Mound was created:

The R臋kawka Festival at the Krak Mound

Since then, every spring, always on the Tuesday after Easter, a grand festival is held to commemorate the good king and the construction of the mound. This festival is called R臋kawka - after the wide, puffy sleeves in which the soil was carried.

During the festival, apples and gingerbread are rolled down the mound and into the hands of the residents of Krakow and children. However, the main attractions are the performances and battles of reenactment groups that come here from all over Poland.
