PTTK Stare Wierchy Shelter is one of the most easily accessible shelters in the Beskids. There are various ways to reach it (more on that later), but the easiest and shortest route to PTTK Stare Wierchy Shelter is through the green trail from Obidowa.
The Easiest and Shortest Trail to Stare Wierchy
The trail to Stare Wierchy Shelter from Obidowa is less than 2 km long. We can reach Obidowa itself by bus (the bus stop at the beginning of the trail is Obidowa Loop) or by car - there are paid and free parking lots.
Green Trail from Obidowa to Stare Wierchy
The green trail Obidowa - Nowy Targ crosses Obidowa near the cross-country ski rental. Initially, it leads through asphalt, which soon turns into a forest gravel and stone road.
Our trail is the access road to the shelter, so a "terrain cart" with large inflatable wheels should also be able to handle it. However, keep in mind that in less than 2 km, we have to overcome an elevation difference of almost 200 m. The road keeps going uphill all the time!
The road can be quite worn out, so after thaw or rainfall, it may get muddy, and water will flow down the easiest path, which is our trail. In such conditions, it is advisable to wear sturdy waterproof shoes (wellingtons, snow boots), and if temperatures drop below zero at night - crampons as well! Ice patches persist on the shaded road even when temperatures on neighboring meadows reach several degrees above zero.
PTTK Stare Wierchy Shelter - Attractions, Views
Depending on our fitness level, we will reach the shelter after less than an hour of climbing. Did you know that in the 13th century, the Royal Road ran through here, and on the clearing where the shelter is located today, there used to be a tavern where travelers could rest and have a meal? Allegedly, it was also frequently visited by bandits!
Today, we can have simple meals here, buy souvenirs, and light a campfire. The shelter is surrounded by vast meadows - in winter, you can bring a sled, in spring - admire fields of crocuses. To enjoy the views, we need to walk a bit uphill, on the red trail towards Turbacz (view to the southwest) or descend towards Rabka (view to the northeast).
