The route starts at the final PKS bus stop in Poręba Górna. There is a parking space on the island near the stop.
At the beginning, we follow the green trail - unfortunately, the start is poorly marked... Standing next to the signpost indicating the beginning of the trail (opposite the PKS stop) with the stop on our right, we need to go straight for a few meters, then turn slightly right onto the asphalt road, up the stream. (The second branch of the asphalt goes downhill along the stream, slightly to the left - there we will find the green educational path, which eventually joins our route).
After a while, the asphalt turns into a gravel road. Pay close attention when you see the sign of the yellow trail, then you need to turn left and cross the stream.
HERE we turn LEFT - where the dog goes, not the people!
From this point on, we will be guided by yellow signs: first through fields, then we ascend along the stream on a wide road.
The further part of the route is a forest path. Soon, we will join the signs of the green educational path 'Around the Poręba Valley'. With them, we will reach the first clearing with a view of Poręba Górna, the western slopes of Tobołów, Suchory, and Obidowiec. This is also a good place for a first stop and a small snack.
Soon after the clearing, the most difficult section of the ascent begins: a steep, rocky ravine...
Fortunately, in about 20-30 minutes, we will have the worst behind us, and a gently rising path will lead us to a clearing at the foot of the shelter:
From here, it's another 10-15 minutes of climbing, and we reach our destination!
ATTENTION! If we have spare time and feel like temporarily deviating from the route, we can turn from the yellow trail onto the educational path (the moment of its temporary detachment from the yellow trail is marked by a post with a wooden arrow). This way, we will reach a secluded clearing called Stare Izbiska with a beautiful view, a table, a bench, and the ruins of a forester's lodge (stone foundations), where the first owner of the Stare Wierchy shelter, Jan Rapciak, lived. During the occupation, partisans sought refuge in the lodge.
After a while, the educational path returns to the yellow trail to Stare Wierchy.
Stare Wierchy PTTK Shelter
The shelter is located on a vast clearing (in spring, it is one of the popular 'crocus' places, and we will encounter crocuses along the entire yellow trail). The shelter offers dinner dishes, sweets, drinks, and of course, accommodation. Interestingly, the Royal Road passed through here as early as the 13th century. On the clearing where the shelter stands today, there used to be a roadside inn, often visited by local outlaws.
From Stare Wierchy, we can return to Poręba using the same yellow trail (about 1.5-2 hours).
We can also make a loop through Maciejowa (and visit two shelters in one trip!) - about 1.5 hours with red markings, and then about the same with green markings, and we will reach the starting point, which is the PKS bus stop in Poręba Górna. This loop is about 12 km:
