Vineta, Jomsborg or Wolin? The history of the Wolin stronghold, despite many years of excavation, is still partially covered by the legend of a sunken, wealthy city. It's really worth getting to know these stories, and the best place to do so is the open-air museum in Wolin! (We recommend virtual stories on the website wolinwsieci.jomsborg-vineta.com)
Slavs and Vikings Center - attractions
The open-air museum operates on the principle of a "living village" - not only do we look at the reconstructions of the wharf and several huts, which were built based on archaeological excavations in the area (descriptions on information boards), but we observe the life of the inhabitants.
Peeking inside, we meet craftsmen: potters, jewelers, herbalists, bakers.
We can watch their work, buy products, try traditional pastries.
Slavs and Vikings Center - for children
For children, a separate playground has been prepared, but the biggest attraction will be the opportunity to make a toy from clay, shoot from a bow, or play with a fortress model.
Slavs and Vikings Center - practical information
Admission is paid, the area is accessible for wheelchairs, and you can also visit with a dog. Toilets at the ticket office.
Souvenirs.... everywhere! Prepare a lot of cash (although some medieval masters accept card payments)
Parking at the open-air museum itself (entrance to the island from the Recław estate side).
You can also walk to Ostrów Island (also called Wolińska Kępa) from Wolin via a rotating bridge, then a bit along Zamkowa Street and down the stairs to a path among the reeds.
Food points on the open-air museum grounds serve traditional snacks: sweet or spicy flatbreads, slices of bread with lard, delicious rolls with herring or fruit, drinks.
Slavs and Vikings Center - festival, events
In the open-air museum, on the first weekend of August, a large (and popularly visited) Slavs and Vikings Festival is organized.
Additionally, many smaller events, workshops, etc. take place here throughout the year. Before your visit, it's worth checking the calendar on the website >>>.
