Why is the sea salty?

For a long time, people have been asking themselves why the sea is salty? There is even a legend that speaks of a salt mill submerged in the sea.

Although we may not find a salt mill at the bottom of the sea, to answer this question, we really need to look at the rocky, sea floor.

Rocks are made up of different minerals, some of these minerals have a salty taste - they are salts. The most common salty mineral found in rocks is halite. We know it very well - it lives in our salt shaker. Our salt, which we use in the kitchen, is halite.

There is a lot of halite and other salty minerals in rocks. Seawater seeps into the rocks and dissolves them. A lot of salt also gets into the sea from lava originating from underwater volcanic eruptions.

But river water also rubs against rocks, so why isn't it salty? River water is also salty, but it's too little salty for our taste buds to sense.

Seas and oceans have a huge surface area that is constantly evaporating. Water evaporates, but salt is too heavy and stays behind, so the remaining water becomes more and more salty. It is so salty that our tongues can taste the salt. In warm countries where the seas evaporate faster, the waters are more salty. The saltiest is the Dead Sea - it's so salty that you can't sink in it - you immediately float to the surface, you don't drown like in normal water! It is so salty that no animals or plants want to live there - that's why it's called the Dead Sea.
