The asphalt bike path along the Vistula River embankment is a great route for a longer bike trip. It is far away from car traffic and perfect for tourists from outside Poland. What should you know before going on such a bike excursion?
The route theoretically starts from Krakow, but in practice, due to the renovation of the embankments to Niepolomice, we have to ride on streets with quite heavy car traffic... We only join the river embankment just before Niepolomice.
Away from Buildings
The route takes us along the river embankments, avoiding urban areas. We are surrounded by nature, which is a great advantage, but make sure to pack enough food and water. We only passed by temporary gastronomic points near Niepolomice, and then there are small hamlets, farms, and some establishments may be closed. It is advisable to plan accommodation and meals in advance for the trip.
Sun and Detours
The river embankments are sunny, and there is little shade along the route. This should be taken into consideration, especially when planning a trip with children. After the village of Ispina, there are some detours, but they lead through interesting, rarely frequented rural streets, which are pleasant and safe to ride on, and the landscape becomes more varied.
Nature, Nature, Nature...
This route is all about experiencing nature. It is worth bringing binoculars as we encountered many animals, such as foxes and storks.
...All the Way to Dunajec and Tarnow
There is a fairly long detour along the Dunajec River - we have to reach the bridge. Then we can return to the Vistula embankment and continue the trip until Laki Szczucinskie or take the Velo Dunajec path, which can take us all the way to Tarnow. Until recently, access was hindered by the closed bridge in Ostrow, but it has now been reopened. Tarnow is an interesting city, sometimes called "Little Krakow" thanks to its town hall in the market square. You can read about Tarnow's attractions in the article Tarnow - attractions and interesting places. It is worth taking a walk along the "medieval walls of Tarnow" trail - there is a beautiful tower preserved.
