Goose Neck (Gęsia Szyja)
Goose Neck is a rocky peak with an elevation of 1489 meters above sea level. Its summit is formed by beautifully curved dolomite rocks, resembling the shape of a "goose neck" to the locals.
The hike to Goose Neck can be conquered by a skilled preschooler. Although the ascent is physically demanding, it is technically easy. The summit can be reached by climbing wooden stairs. Both from Goose Neck and the nearby Rusinowa Polana, you can enjoy a beautiful panorama of the Tatra Mountains.
Trail to Goose Neck via Rusinowa Polana
The trail starts from the Wierch Poroniec parking lot.
If traveling by car: From Zakopane, head towards Morskie Oko. The Wierch Poroniec parking lot is located 3 km before Łysa Polana (the starting point of the trail to Morskie Oko).
If using a bus: Take a bus heading to Morskie Oko but get off one stop earlier at the Wierch Poroniec stop.
From the Wierch Poroniec parking lot, an easy, pedestrian, green trail will lead you to Rusinowa Polana after approximately 1 hour of walking (3 km).
Missed the stop? Don't worry! Instead of taking the red trail to Morskie Oko, turn onto the blue trail, which leads to Rusinowa Polana (about 35 minutes of walking).
Rusinowa Polana
Rusinowa Polana is one of the most scenic meadows in the Polish Tatra Mountains! From here, you can admire the view of the High Tatras range. Sometimes, sheep grazing takes place on Rusinowa Polana, and there is also a shepherd's hut where you can buy warm oscypek (smoked sheep cheese) and enjoy żętyca (whey) made from sheep's milk. It is said that Rusinowa Polana offers the most beautiful view of the Tatras, including the Slovak peaks of Hawrań and Murań.
From Rusinowa Polana to Goose Neck
When on Rusinowa Polana, you will easily notice the trail to Goose Neck. It consists of wooden stairs that seem to have no end as you climb upward! The trail is technically easy but tiring. Are you ready for the climb? Get ready to breathe heavily, like a locomotive! The stairs cover an elevation gain of 280 meters. Caution: On rainy days, the wooden beams of the stairs may be slippery!
