Kłodzko: Gateway to the Sudetes
Kłodzko is a historic city located in the Kłodzko Valley at the foot of the Bardzkie Mountains. It is one of the oldest towns in the region, with its historic Old Town and the imposing Kłodzko Fortress overlooking it. Underneath the old town of Kłodzko, there are partially accessible underground passages for visitors to explore.
- You can reach Kłodzko by train, getting off at the "Kłodzko Miasto" station (NOTE: Kłodzko Główne station is about 2 km from the city center).
- The main attractions of the city are the towering fortress, the Old Town, the Gothic Bridge, and the underground passages.
Starting point of the trail to Kłodzka Góra
The trail to Kłodzka Góra starts in the center of Kłodzko. To reach the mountain trail, we first need to leave the city, which takes about 40 minutes. We walk on a sometimes narrow sidewalk. Once we have left the city, we enter a forest that covers the hill of Szyndzielnia.
Szyndzielnia: Hill with a Viewing Tower
The trail we are following bypasses the summit of Szyndzielnia. If we want, we can take a detour and approach the summit, but the summit itself is forested and offers no views. There is an old brick viewing tower that is no longer in use. Better views and panoramas await us further on.
After leaving Szyndzielnia, we come across a beautiful meadow with scenic views. If you plan to rest, this is definitely the right place. At the end of the meadow, we will have to walk a short stretch along a street, but it is just a temporary break in our mountain hike.
Enjoyable hike through the forest
The rest of the trail is a very pleasant forest path that offers numerous open sections and beautiful views. This is where the nature of the Sudetes reveals itself in all its splendor.
Kłodzka Góra and the viewing tower
It is interesting to note that Kłodzka Góra was mistakenly recognized as the highest peak of the Bardzkie Mountains and included in the Crown of Polish Mountains. In reality, this distinction belongs to its neighbor, Szeroka Góra, which is about 8 meters higher. However, there is no trail leading to its summit.
The Viewing Tower on Kłodzka Góra is impressive! It is a tall structure that we ascend using spiral stairs. The tower has several levels with observation decks. The highest deck is located at a height of 30 meters. From there, we can enjoy panoramic views of the Śnieżnik Massif, the Orlickie Mountains, the Bardzkie Mountains, and the Sowie Mountains. On a clear day, we can even see the Karkonosze Mountains and Wrocław.
Władysław Bishop Trail
This unique trail is named after Władysław Bishop, a lover and promoter of mountain tourism, a legend of mountain rescue. He was an Honorary Member of GOPR (Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue), a Sudeten Mountain Guide, and a long-time activist of the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (PTTK). By hiking this trail, we honor his memory and his immense contribution to the development of mountain tourism in the Sudetes.
From Kłodzka Góra, we can also descend to the town of Bardo via the blue trail.
