Tadeusz Kościuszko Park in Katowice
Kościuszko Park is the largest park in Katowice, which hides many attractions, monuments, and curiosities within its vast area. The park's origins date back to 1888 when a city park was distinguished from suburban forest areas. Below, we propose a route through the park combining its various attractions.
- There are two playgrounds for children in the park, both in the sun
Parachute Tower
The Parachute Tower in Katowice is a 35-meter steel structure that is a replica of the old tower, the only one in the country. Parachute towers were built during the interwar period. Allegedly, there were sixteen of them in Poland. They were located in big cities such as Warsaw, Bydgoszcz, and Łódź. The Parachute Tower in Kościuszko Park is a symbol of the region's struggle for freedom - here, in the early days of World War II, the Katowice scouts resisted the German troops.
Playground and Mini Zoo
This is one of the two playgrounds located in the park. Right next to the playground is a mini zoo: an enclosure where you can see geese and ducks.
Fountain
A charming fountain with a bridge over a pond and shaded benches hidden under a pergola is a secluded resting place amidst the greenery.
Commemorative plaque of T. Kościuszko
The main square of the park is dedicated to its patron - Tadeusz Kościuszko. There is a commemorative plaque, funded to patron Tadeusz Kościuszko by the society of Katowice in 1925. There are benches and picnic meadows near the square.
Ginkgo Biloba Tree
A curiosity of the park is the extraordinary tree growing here - Ginkgo biloba. This tree originates from China, in Japan it is one of the popular autumn trees - it can be easily found in Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, city parks, and along streets.
Wooden Church of St. Michael the Archangel
The Wooden Church of St. Michael the Archangel, standing at the highest point of Kościuszko Park in Katowice, is the oldest religious building in Katowice. Interestingly, it does not originate from Katowice - the wooden church was built in 1510 in Syrynia, it was moved to Katowice in 1938.
Sledding Hill
Right next to the church is a sledding hill. Outside the winter season, it's perfect for picnics or carefree running down the grass.
