Levanto-Framura - An Easy Walking and Cycling Route near Cinque Terre
A real treat for lovers of industrial atmospheres! The trail for pedestrians and cyclists runs through former railway tunnels carved into the rock. It is far away from cars, making it perfect for a family bike trip with children or a stroll with a stroller. It is also ideal for bad weather - when it's raining, windy, or sunny. The trail is located between the towns of Levanto, Bonassola, and Framura, right next to Cinque Terre.
- The entire route is about 6.5 km long, flat, and entirely paved
- There is a designated area for pedestrians and cyclists
- On hot days, it's recommended to bring a warmer sweater as it can be cool inside the tunnels
- Although the route is only 6 kilometers long, there are plenty of attractions such as beaches, viewpoints, and ports to visit, making it a full-day excursion
- Bike rentals can be found in Levanto, and each town has extensive bike parking facilities
- We recommend traveling to Levanto or Framura by train - it is the most convenient way to get around the Cinque Terre region. However, if you are traveling by car, it will be easiest to find parking in Levanto
How to Get to Levanto-Framura?
The route runs between the towns of Levanto and Framura, passing through the town of Bonassola. All three towns have train stations where trains traveling through Cinque Terre, from La Spezia to Sestri Levante, stop. It is best to check the train schedule on the Italian railways website www.trenitalia.com. We traveled from La Spezia to Framura and then walked to Levanto.
Description of the Levanto-Framura Route
We cover almost the entire distance inside tunnels. The tunnel walls are damp, and sometimes water drips from them, giving us a feeling of being in a cave. We even found hanging salt stalactites on the ceiling! The tunnel is illuminated.
- The Levanto-Bonassola section is shorter and has more windows and exits from the tunnel. We pass by viewpoints and beach access points.
- The Bonassola-Framura section is longer and almost entirely runs through a tunnel, with sporadic exits and windows
What to See in Framura?
Framura is a municipality composed of several settlements located on a steep cliff. If you arrived here by train, there is actually nothing right after leaving the station ;) The individual small villages are slightly higher up from the station, and we climb up many stairs.
However, what is particularly worth seeing in the town of Framura is the scenic path along the cliff edge, leading from Torsei Beach (right next to the train station in Framura) to Arena Beach. The path is about 0.6 km long.

Via del Mare - a paved path along the cliffs near Cinque Terre
Right next to the bike parking lot and the entrance to the tunnels, there is a small but very charming port in Framura surrounded by rocks. We can descend here by stairs or take an elevator.
Bonassola
In Bonassola, we can relax on the extensive pebble beach. Along the beach, there is a promenade with benches and rest areas. Bonassola has more gastronomic establishments than Framura, making it easier to find a place to eat.
It is also worth walking to the small church located on the edge of the cliff - Cappella della Madonnina della Punta. It takes about 20 minutes to walk there from the town and the beach along Via Roma, which is rarely frequented by cars. You will definitely encounter more pedestrians than cars on this street. The views of the beach in Bonassola are stunning from this route.
Levanto
Levanto is the largest of these three towns. The section of the route between Bonassola and Levanto is much busier. Before reaching Levanto, there are exits from the tunnel, viewpoints, and even access to a small pebble beach:
A pedestrian promenade and a long stretch of beach lead us to Levanto. Levanto is a fairly large town often chosen as a base for visiting Cinque Terre. You will find many restaurants, pizzerias, and cafes here. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Levanto Beach to the train station.
