Tenczyn Castle in Rudno – once one of the largest castles in Lesser Poland!

Tenczyn Castle stands on a hill above the area around Krzeszowice, about 24 kilometers west of Krakow. It is the northernmost castle on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests, a famous route of medieval castles in southern Poland. In the past, it was one of the largest castles in the Lesser Poland region. Because of its beautiful arcades, people even called it the "Little Wawel". Today, the ruins have been restored and are open to visitors. You can also enter the castle tower. The castle and the area around it offer many beautiful viewpoints.

Public transport to the castle is limited, so the easiest way to get here is by car. There is a paid car park next to the castle. Free parking spaces are available at the bottom of the castle hill.

History of the castle

The history of Tenczyn Castle goes back to the 14th century, when the powerful Toporczyk family built the first fortress here. Later, the castle became a Renaissance residence of rich nobles. It was known as the "Little Wawel" and was full of life. Famous Polish writers, such as Jan Kochanowski and Mikołaj Rej, visited the castle. Its best years ended during the Swedish invasion of Poland in 1655. The Swedes heard rumors that the Polish crown treasure was hidden in the castle cellars. They captured the castle by trick and burned it down. The fortress was partly rebuilt, but in the 18th century another fire, caused by lightning, turned it into a ruin. Luckily, the parts that survived are now very well cared for. With a little imagination, you can still see how impressive this castle once was.

Visiting the castle

The sightseeing route goes through restored courtyards, parts of old defensive walls, and scenic corners of the ruins. From the castle, you can see wide views of Dulowska Forest, the Krzeszowice area, and, in good weather, even the Beskid and Tatra Mountains. A special attraction is the climb to Nawojowa Tower, the highest point of the castle. From there, you can see the area from a completely different perspective. In the tourist season, guided tours are often available. Guides tell visitors about the Tenczynski family, the secrets of the fortress, and its unusual location on the remains of an ancient volcano.

Tenczyn Castle in Rudno is one of the most unusual places in the whole Krakow-Czestochowa Upland!

Like other castles in this region, it was built from white limestone. This rock formed at the bottom of a warm Jurassic sea that covered this area millions of years ago. In the castle floors and walls, you can find many marks and casts of ammonite shells. Ammonites were sea animals that lived here long ago.

Tenczyn Castle is special because, among the Eagles' Nests castles, it is the only one standing on an ancient, solidified lava flow that came out of a deep crack in the rock.

Agates – treasures of the volcanic hill

Volcanoes near Krakow may sound surprising, but it is true. Today the hill is covered with green forest and the landscape is calm, so it is hard to imagine fire and hot lava here. Around 280 million years ago, during the Permian period, this area was much closer to the equator. The climate was hot and dry, and cracks in the Earth's crust allowed magma to reach the surface.

Small empty bubbles in the cooled lava were later naturally filled with silica and different minerals. This is how agates were formed. They are like small works of art made by nature.

Near the castle, you can visit the Agate Museum, dedicated to these unusual minerals. The museum collection includes agates found in the area, including beautiful landscape agates, as well as fossils of animals that lived in the warm Jurassic sea. The museum staff also organize events connected with searching for agates.
