Szczawno-Zdrój - what is worth seeing?
A spa-town walk among parks, villas, and views
Szczawno-Zdrój was a very pleasant surprise for us. It is a small spa town next to Wałbrzych in south-western Poland, but it has a lot of elegance, greenery, and places where time seems to slow down. You do not need to rush from one attraction to another here. The best plan is to walk along the park paths, visit the mineral water pump room, stroll along Kościuszki Street, and look at the old guesthouses and villas.
The spa center is compact, distances are short, and you can easily adjust the walk to your energy level. It is also suitable for children and older visitors. Szczawno-Zdrój is a good idea for a short trip from Wałbrzych. You can get here by local city bus. It is also a nice, quiet afternoon stop after visiting Książ Castle, or a starting point for an easy walk to Gedymin Hill.
Mineral Water Pump Room and Walking Hall
The most elegant place in Szczawno-Zdrój is the area around the Mineral Water Pump Room and the Walking Hall. This is where you can best feel the atmosphere of an old European spa resort, with elegant architecture, wooden details, benches, peace, and people walking slowly.
It is worth going inside, even just for a short moment. The Walking Hall is very photogenic and pleasant. It is not too large or overwhelming, so you can simply look around and enjoy the calm atmosphere.
A short history of the spa town: the Hochberg family and Princess Daisy
Szczawno-Zdrój has a much longer history than you might think during a quiet walk in the park. For many centuries, the town was connected with the Książ Castle estate and the Hochberg family, the owners of Książ Castle, who had a strong influence on the development of the whole area.
Szczawno became especially popular as a spa resort in the 19th century, when trips to mineral waters became fashionable. The resort was expanded with parks, pump rooms, medical spa buildings, and elegant places for spa guests. Because of this, a walk through Szczawno-Zdrój today feels a little like stepping into an old world of aristocratic holidays, concerts, spa treatments, and afternoon promenades.
Princess Daisy von Pless, one of the most famous residents of Książ Castle, is also closely connected with this history. In Szczawno-Zdrój, her story is especially linked with the Spa House. The building was created at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to the Hochberg family. Princess Daisy is remembered here not only as the lady from the nearby castle, but also as a person who helped shape the elegant character of this place.
The spa center and Kościuszki Street
From the pump room, it is worth walking towards Tadeusza Kościuszki Street. This is one of the most characteristic streets in the spa part of the town, with old villas, guesthouses, and buildings that immediately make you think of a classic spa resort.
The walk is not long or difficult. You can go slowly and look at the verandas, balconies, decorated facades, and old trees. This is where Szczawno-Zdrój has much of its charm: not in huge attractions, but in its calm and elegant atmosphere.
In this part of the spa town, also look for small sculptures and little city details. One of them is the Lady of Roses near the Natural Treatment Center. It is a friendly spot and a nice place for a photo.
Near the spa center, you can also find the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its shape fits well with the historic buildings of the town and it can be another short stop during your walk.
Spa Park – the green heart of Szczawno-Zdrój
Right next to the pump room is Spa Park, one of the most pleasant places in Szczawno-Zdrój. There are wide paths, plenty of shade, fountains, benches, and quiet corners where you can rest from the sun or simply sit for a while with no plan.
It is a great park for a family walk. Children can move around more freely, adults can sit down and rest, and the whole area is so close to the center that you do not need to plan a separate trip. From the Spa Park area, you can also continue towards Gedymin Hill. But before you start that route, it is worth slowly walking around the nicest park paths first.
Anna Tower – a small viewpoint close to the center
One of the more interesting places in the spa part of Szczawno-Zdrój is Anna Tower. It is not a long trip or a difficult climb. It is more like a pleasant stop during a walk around the center and nearby paths.
You can already see the tower from Kościuszki Street. After going up, you can look at the spa town from a slightly different angle and see how Szczawno-Zdrój is surrounded by greenery and hills. It is a good choice if you like short viewpoints without planning a bigger hike.
Swedish Park – the quieter side of the spa town
The second large green area in Szczawno-Zdrój is Swedish Park. It is a little quieter and a bit farther from the most elegant part of the spa town, so it is perfect if you want to extend your walk.
There are wide paths, lots of greenery, and more open space for walking with children. If, after Spa Park, you still want more shade and a peaceful park atmosphere, Swedish Park is a very good direction.
During the walk, it is also worth looking for small nature details. In Swedish Park, you can find, for example, an insect house. It is a small thing, but children often find it interesting.
From Szczawno-Zdrój to Gedymin Hill and the viewing tower
One of the main attractions of Szczawno-Zdrój is the viewing tower on Gedymin Hill. One of the most popular family-friendly routes in the area leads there. The path gently goes uphill, partly through a park and forest, and ends at a modern viewing tower. The easiest plan is to combine this route with a walk through Spa Park and the area around the pump room. This way, one trip gives you the spa atmosphere of Szczawno-Zdrój, pleasant park paths, and a light walk to a viewpoint.
On the way to Gedymin Hill, it is also worth making a small detour to the pond on Gedymin Hill. It is a very pleasant place for a short break before going up the tower. There are benches, viewpoints, water, and a small beach. This stop works especially well with children: you can rest for a moment, look at the pond, and then continue towards the viewing platform.
