Museum in Nikiszowiec – a special journey through the history of Silesia
Located in the heart of historic Nikiszowiec, on Rymarska Street, close to the main Wyzwolenia Square, the museum shows the everyday life of old Silesian families, the history of this mining workers' district, and the local culture. Nikiszowiec is one of the most interesting places to visit in the Silesian region, and the museum is a great place to start exploring this unique part of Katowice.
The museum does not tell history like a school textbook. Here you can see how people really lived in a workers' settlement and what everyday life was like for mining families.
What can you see in the museum in Nikiszowiec?
The exhibition is arranged like an old workers' apartment, with a kitchen and two rooms. The interiors and objects show the everyday life of people who lived in the district, as well as local traditions and popular hobbies. The main attraction of the museum is the carefully recreated workers' apartment from the early 20th century. Visitors can see:
- old furniture, home equipment, and a traditional Silesian kitchen
- everyday objects used by local families
The exhibitions show what life was like for Silesian families, from daily duties to holidays and traditions passed down through generations.
WATER AND SOAP. THE BEST WHITENER. IN THE LAUNDRY AND MANGLE ROOM IN NIKISZOWIEC
The museum is located in an old public laundry building, which was very modern for its time. Its original equipment has been preserved, including large boilers, tubs, drying rooms, and mangles. It is a good place to show children how much hard work laundry once required, before modern washing machines did it for us.
AROUND THE MASTERS OF THE JANOWSKA GROUP
Next to the tubs and mangles, you can see an exhibition of unusual paintings made by self-taught artists from the local area. In the paintings, you can find the typical buildings of Nikiszowiec, scenes from the everyday life of miners, and even scenes from the local laundry. Many paintings show traditional entertainment, free-time activities, and in some of them you can even spot fantastic creatures.
Practical information:
- workshops for children - The museum organizes temporary exhibitions and activities for groups.
- The exhibition is on the first floor, and there is a lift. There is a baby changing table in the toilet.
We recommend the family museum guide. It includes many interesting facts about the exhibitions and puzzles for children to solve during the visit.
