The history of the castle, located on a hill above Lake Czorsztyn, dates back to the 14th century.

During the times when the Dunajec River marked the Polish-Hungarian border, the Dunajec Castle in Niedzica was a Hungarian fortress, while the castle in Czorsztyn belonged to the Poles.
