Located on a limestone cliff above the Vistula River, the Benedictine Abbey is the oldest monastery in Poland! It was founded over 1000 years ago, around 1044. In the past, the order served as a border fortress defending access to Krakow. It flourished because the abbey had the privilege of exploiting salt mines - it used to be one of the richest monasteries in Poland. The Benedictines brew their own beer called Tyniecia, using new recipes that draw on the monastery's brewing tradition.

Sightseeing

There is an opportunity for individual visits to the museum, which is located in the restored former library (ground floor and basement). Here, we can see archaeological excavations and architectural details from the 11th-13th centuries. You can also choose to tour the entire Abbey with a guide. Audio guides are available, including a version for children. On the monastery hill, it is also worth visiting the restaurant Mnisze Co Nieco (stairs are available, high chair for feeding, delicious pierogi available for purchase!), a caf茅, a bookstore, and a shop with famous Benedictine products.

Green Trail

It is worth taking a moment to walk along the green trail located behind the parking lot, where we can admire the rocks on which the abbey is situated. There is also a ferry that operates from the abbey to the other side of the Vistula - the monastery looks most beautiful from there!
