The Kozy Quarry, on the north slopes of Chrobacza Łąka, is a very scenic place. It is a viewpoint and an easy-to-reach recreation area for a family walk or picnic. Kozy is a village near Bielsko-Biała in southern Poland.
Kozy Quarry - highlights
Stone was mined here until the early 1990s, mainly sandstone. Over 100 years ago a special aerial cable railway more than 2.5 km long carried the rock from the quarry to the railway station.
Today you can see an impressive rock wall with a clear exposure of rhythmic Carpathian flysch — layered sandstone and shale typical for the Carpathians (Lgockie layers).
Part of the pit has filled with groundwater, which makes the place even more charming and photogenic. There are many fish here, and fishing contests are sometimes held.
Extra attractions include a historic mine cart, information boards with geology facts, a bench with a goat, and a modern steel sculpture: Earth Guardian \"Terranus\" (by Dariusz Fluder, 2021).
Viewpoints at Kozy Quarry
Thanks to its location, there is a beautiful view to the north — towards the Silesian Foothills and the Vistula River Valley. What you see is described on a special \"book\" display.
There is also an extra viewpoint on top of the rock wall — the approach is a steep path, enter at your own risk.
How to get to Kozy Quarry
Although the quarry lies high on the steep slopes of Chrobacza Łąka, it is fairly easy to reach. The easiest way is to walk from the parking area at the end of Piaskowa Street (about 500 m; 50 m elevation gain).
You can also choose the forest path along the green trail — from the parking on Panienki Street it is about 900 m and about 100 m elevation gain.
If you arrive in Kozy by train, from the PKP (Polish Railways) station follow the green trail to the quarry (3.5 km, about 190 m elevation gain, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes one way). If you want to continue hiking on this trail, you will reach the top of Chrobacza Łąka.
