The famous sandstone debris field, from which stonecutters from Bartne carved Lemko crosses, is the first protected area in the Low Beskids. The Kornuty Reserve has been under protection since 1935 (now within the buffer zone of the Magura National Park).

The geological curiosity, known as the group of rocks also called the Rocky Forest, is located on the southern slope of the Magura Wątkowska ridge. Its name comes from the Vlach word meaning horns. Just a few decades ago, there was no forest here, but extensive meadows, and the visible rocks from a distance resembled devil's horns.

To this day, Kornuty is a unique natural environment: many rare species of plants and animals live here (including the Aesculapian snake), and a wolf pack is occasionally seen nearby. The longest cave in the area, Mroczna Cave, is also located here.

The rocks are not fenced off, and those interested can try wild climbing - of course, with necessary caution, paying attention to numerous cracks and crevices! Smaller, safer rocks for children to play on, which are equally picturesque, can be found nearby: between the peaks of Magóra Jasielska and Wątkowa.

Legends about Kornuty

Numerous legends are associated with the rocks, about the bandits who lived here and their hidden treasures: Kornut the bandit and Sypko the bandit. There were also devils who threw rocks from the Devil's Stone Reserve. (more in the book by A. Potocki, Polish-Ruthenian Beskids. Legends and Tales, published by Libra).

How to get to the Kornuty Reserve?

From Bartne, the yellow trail leads here (quite steep, 1.5 hours to the intersection of trails and about 20 minutes on the green trail to the reserve). From Folusz, there are 3 trails: the shortest and steepest is the yellow trail (about 2 hours to the reserve), the gentler green trail goes through the summit of Magura (about 3 hours), or through the peak of Barwinok: black + green (3 hours):
