Jordan Spring in the Dłubnia Valley in Ściborzyce

Town:

Jordan Spring is one of the most interesting and beautiful karst springs in the Dłubnia Valley. It is famous for its turquoise water and a pulsing outflow. The spring is in the village of Ściborzyce, inside the Dłubnia Landscape Park (Lesser Poland, near Kraków, Poland). A small footpath leaves the main road through Ściborzyce and leads to the spring. The spot is surrounded by trees, and there are wooden picnic shelters. Please stay on the path and do not swim.

  • The easiest way to get here is by car—the spring sits roughly halfway between the villages of Ściborzyce and Małaszyce.
  • From Kraków you can also take the A12 bus run by Koleje Małopolskie; get off at the stop "Ściborzyce II" (check the timetable in the link).

What the spring looks like and the pulsing effect

The most distinctive feature is the unusual color—the water has an intense turquoise-emerald hue. This comes from the very clear water and the light-colored sediments on the bottom. Another highlight is the pulsing outflow: water pushes out of rock cracks under pressure, so on the basin floor you can see a gentle pulse or small geysers that move the layer of sediments.

History and past use

The water stays at a constant temperature of about 10°C (50°F), so the spring does not freeze in winter and keeps its special look all year. Local people used it in the past—in the basin you can still see remains of a wooden structure that once helped store food. The spring worked as a natural refrigerator for the nearby manor in Ściborzyce.

Legend of the sunken carriage

The spring is quite deep—about 3 meters (around 10 feet). A local legend says a horse-drawn carriage once sank here. There is no historical proof, but the story is often told by locals and visitors.
