Crocus - the mountain harbinger of spring

It's hard to imagine spring in the mountains without meadows covered in a purple carpet! This unassuming flower, peeking its head above the lingering layer of snow, is considered one of the most beautiful spring flowers.

Did you know that crocuses need sheep for their growth?

Crocus, also known as Spotted Saffron, because that's the Latin name of this unassuming purple flower, likes soil rich in nitrogen, which is found in the ground along with sheep droppings. That's why crocuses bloom most beautifully in pastures where sheep graze - the famous carpet of crocuses can be found in the Tatra Mountains' Chochołowska Valley. On unfrequented pastures, the population of these charming flowers begins to decline.
