Pieniny Castle
This is the highest fortress in Poland! Located in the Trzy Korony massif, it served as a shelter for Saint Kinga, who hid here with her sisters and nuns during the Tatar invasion. Today, only ruins of the castle remain - defensive walls, the outline of a tower, and a cistern used for storing water supplies. Legends of a hidden treasure in the castle have circulated for centuries. Although no gold coins were found during archaeological excavations, fragments of the former floor, ceramic vessels, and arrowheads were discovered. Inside the castle, there is a cave dedicated to Saint Kinga with a figurine.
Route through Pieniny Castle to Trzy Korony
You can make your way to Trzy Korony more interesting by taking a loop with the blue trail through Pieniny Castle. This will add an extra 700 meters to the route, which should take about 20 minutes longer. The trail is not easy - there is a steep, rocky ascent with railings to reach the castle ruins, and the rocks can be slippery, so caution is advised. Almost the entire route leads through the forest.
Trzy Korony
Trzy Korony is the most distinctive and popular peak in the Pieniny Mountains, with several sharp peaks resembling a royal crown! According to legend, it is the crown of Saint Kinga, who, while fleeing from the Tatars, is said to have thrown her golden crown behind her - thus creating the Tatra and Pieniny Mountains. On the highest peak of the 'crown' called OkrÄ…glica, which stands at 982 meters above sea level, there is an observation terrace. From the summit, you can enjoy views of the Tatra Mountains, Slovakia, and the meandering silver ribbon of the Dunajec River.
