Cinque Terre, which translates to "Five Lands," is a collection of five small towns with colorful houses perched on steep cliffs along the Italian coast. There are fantastic trekking trails that connect these towns - walking along them is a true adventure, although it can be tiring, the views are beautiful!

Monterosso - Vernazza Trail with Children

The trail does not pose any major technical difficulties: the path is quite wide, paved with stones. Although the stones may be uneven in some places and the inclines steeper, an average person and even a technically competent preschooler can easily manage it. Many guidebooks describe the route as easy, and indeed, walking along it does not require any special skills - there are no chains, dangerous rocky passages, etc. Although the trail is not technically challenging, it does require good physical fitness - the ascent is long and quite tiring.

Monterosso al Maare

It is the northernmost town among the Cinque Terre. It is also the largest of all five towns and features a long beach with a promenade. Unfortunately, most of these beaches are private - during the season, private beach chairs are set up, so you cannot just lay down there. However, you can bring your own blankets/towels and set up at the ends of each beach.

From Monterosso to Vernazza - Trail Description

The trails between the towns in Cinque Terre have a similar character - we laboriously climb up the cliff from the starting town, only to descend to the town we are heading to. So, although the distances between the towns are not large, completing the trail is quite a challenge! Therefore, be prepared for a long and tiring ascent, followed by a descent to sea level. But what wouldn't you do for such views!

Descending to Vernazza

It is best to hike the trail towards Vernazza - this way, you have a view of its characteristic medieval tower, which is the symbol of the town. Vernazza is one of the most beautiful towns in Cinque Terre and looks best when seen from above!

Vernazza - Beaches

Vernazza has two beaches - the first one is small and located right by the waterfront. The larger and more beautiful beach is found on the other side of the cliff - you can reach it through a rocky tunnel that branches off from Via Roma street. When we were here in January 2020, the passage was blocked with tape, but that didn't stop tourists from ignoring the signs and sunbathing on the beach.
