Lemon Path - Sentiero dei Limoni
This is a short, picturesque trail between the towns of Maiori and Minori, running through lemon groves and fields. It was an ancient route where harvests were carried on mules' backs to the ports. With a bit of luck, you can still see such a sight! This path is great for a walk with children, as they can feel free once on the trail - we walk on a narrow, pedestrian path with a stone wall on both sides.
- The trail itself is easy, but to get to it from the beach and town, we have to climb about 400 stairs, and the descent from the trail is the same.
- The trail is very well marked, entirely paved, comfortable, and accessible at any time of the year
- The entire route is about 3 km and it will take us about an hour and a half to complete it
Trail start in Maiori
The trail in Maiori starts at the Parrocchia S. Maria A Mare church built in 1505. There is a viewing terrace and a bench where you can rest. From here, you can enjoy the view of the surrounding cliffs and the town of Maiori below.
Lemon path - trail description
The lemon trail itself is hard to miss - the path is very well marked. Having climbed the stairs from the town, we have already gained some height - now we can admire the terraced lemon groves below against the backdrop of the blue sea.
Lemons - the gold of the Amalfi Coast
Sometimes the trail leads us under wooden scaffolding, where golden lemons hang just above our heads. Our visit to the local coast was at the end of February - during winter holidays - although the greenery was not so intense, we could admire the yellow lemons in the local orchards.
Did you know that the tastiest lemons in Italy grow on the Amalfi Coast? Amalfi lemons, or Sfusato Amalfitano, have an irregular shape compared to other lemon varieties and are larger, their skin is full of essential oils. They also have a sweeter taste and are less acidic. They owe their fame to Limoncello - an Italian liqueur made from lemon peels.
In the wall paintings in Pompeii from around 80 AD, lemon trees are already visible! The lemons growing on the Amalfi Coast have more vitamin C, which was a remedy in the fight against scurvy - formerly common among sailors.
Donkey - the symbol of Amalfi
The cultivation of lemons has remained unchanged for centuries, as the terraced arrangement of orchards on steep slopes prevents the introduction of modern technologies. Lemons are picked by hand, and the harvest is most often transported to ports by donkeys! So don't be surprised if you meet them on your path, as these brave animals still help farmers bring heavier supplies to these hard-to-reach places.
No wonder the friendly donkey has become a symbol of the Amalfi Coast - in souvenir shops you will easily find porcelain figurines of these brave helpers.
Descent to Minori
The descent to Minori is equally scenic - another cape of the coast with the town of Minori below and the town of Ravello located on the rocks is spread out before us. Do you see those rock walls on the ridge of the cliff? That's where Villa Cimbrone, famous for its Terrace of Infinity, is located.
Minori itself is famous for one of the oldest Italian pastas, Ndunderi di Minori. The local pasta resembles gnocchi, but with the difference that it is made from ricotta cheese.
