The asphalt bike path along the Skawina-Łączany water channel is an interesting proposition for a family bike trip.
- Almost the entire route is asphalt (with a short gravel section) and separated from car traffic.
- The route is about 10 km long, but you can continue the trip on the Vistula Cycling Route all the way to Oświęcim.
- It's recommended to bring food and water as there are no restaurants or shops along the route.
- Near the route, there is the Pobory Skawińskie railway station, where trains of Małopolskie Railways stop.
- Soon (on September 15), the renovated section of the Vistula embankments near Tyńiec will be opened, connecting the route with Krakow.
Łączany Canal
... also known as the Skawina-Łączany canal, is a navigable waterway running parallel to the Vistula River. It supplies water to the power plant in Skawina and is used for the movement of barges and other floating objects with a capacity of 600 tons. The canal features a lock in Borek Szlachecki. It is 85 meters long, 12 meters wide, and has a water level difference of 12.0 meters. This is the highest lock in Poland. The lock operation time for ascending and descending is 45 minutes.
Bike path along the canal
A bike path has been built along the canal. While riding, you can hear birds chirping among the reeds as the canal banks are densely covered with reed mace.
One less pleasant section of the route is the exit from Rzemieślnicza Street and a short ride on the street:
After the detour, we reach the canal, which has a short gravel section.
Łuczański Canal - birdwatching
The reservoir, created after the construction of a water intake in Łączany to facilitate water supply for the Skawina thermal power plant, is currently the largest wintering site for birds on the upper Vistula! It is also an important resting place for migrating birds.
The following birds can be seen here during winter: mute swans, tufted ducks, common pochards, smew, grebes, and grey herons.
