Jawor Mountain (723 m above sea level) near Wysowa, on the Polish-Slovak border, is a unique place often visited by tourists and pilgrims. There is a chapel here - the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God, which stands on the site of Marian apparitions from the 1920s. Nearby is a clearing with a view of the green hills of the Slovak part of the Low Beskid.
How to reach the forest chapel on Holy Jawor Mountain?
From Wysowa Zdr贸j to the chapel and viewpoint on Jawor Mountain, there is a comfortable, wide road. We can go here with a stroller or a bicycle (although it will be "uphill" towards the end, and the last few dozen meters are quite rocky).
Wysowa Zdr贸j: the beginning of the road to Jawor Mountain
The trail begins at the wooden church and the tourist information point (there is a parking lot for a few cars).
Alternatively, you can also drive further and leave the car in a small bay a few hundred meters before the chapel.
Initially, we walk together with the green trail, leading to the Cigelka Pass. The wide road takes us through picturesque fields and meadows.
Just before entering the forest, the roads diverge: the green trail leads straight along a narrow path, and the wide road to the chapel turns left - this place is well marked with a signpost.
The last section of the road still leads along a comfortable road, but it is already more shaded. Towards the end, it also becomes a bit steeper.
After less than an hour from leaving Wysowa, we will reach our destination: a chapel hidden in the forest and the surrounding forest of crosses.
Chapel of the Protection of the Mother of God on Holy Jawor Mountain
The history of this place is associated with Marian apparitions from 1925. The first church was built here in 1929. The chapel, along with the miraculous spring, quickly became a popular pilgrimage destination for Lemkos from both Poland and Slovakia.
After World War II, due to the displacement of the Greek Catholic population, the place was neglected and turned into a border guard post. Only one icon survived from the burnt interior... The church was rebuilt after 1969.
In the surroundings of the chapel, we will find a "forest of crosses" commemorating important events and numerous pilgrimages of the faithful from different parts of Poland, Slovakia and the world.
Church on Jawor Mountain - pilgrimages, ceremonies, masses and services
The main ceremonies in the chapel on Jawor Mountain take place on the day of the apostles Peter and Paul on July 12, when a procession of pilgrims carrying their own smaller and larger wooden crosses sets out from Wysowa Zdr贸j.
In addition, regular services and masses are held in the forest chapel on Jawor Mountain, celebrated by the Greek Catholic Parish in Wysowa Zdr贸j. Current information about ceremonies, including, for example, night pilgrimages (!) can be found on the website gora-jawor.pl >>>
Viewpoint under Jawor Mountain
Once we reach the chapel, it is worth going a little further along the forest road (it may be difficult with a stroller here, but one with large wheels will manage) to the viewpoint clearing. The unmarked but wide path takes about 10 minutes from the chapel to the border red trail:
From here we will see the fields and gentle hills of the Slovak part of the Low Beskid, including the characteristic three-peaked massif of Busov (1002 m above sea level) - this is the highest peak of the Low Beskid, 5 m higher than the Polish record holder of this range, which is the "police mountain": Lackowa (997 m above sea level) - and we will also see it from here!
