The water dam and hydroelectric power plant are the main attractions of Solina. It's worth stopping here on your way to the Bieszczady Mountains! Thanks to them, the "Bieszczady Sea" - Lake Solina was created on the San River. Today, tourists can engage in various water sports, go fishing, take a walk on the dam's crest, and also visit its interior and the hydroelectric power plant.
Solina Dam and Lake Solina
The water dam in Solina was built in the 1960s. Its construction was a major undertaking, and at the time of its completion, the dam was the largest of its kind in Europe!
What to Know About Solina Dam?
- The construction of the dam led to the flooding of 5 villages and the relocation of 3,000 people.
- The main purpose of the dam is flood prevention (the generation of electricity is an additional function).
- It is the highest water dam in Poland, with a height of 82 meters.
- Lake Solina is the largest artificial reservoir in Poland, with a shoreline of over 150 kilometers!
- There used to be the largest mural in Poland on the dam, created in 2015 by removing deposits. Unfortunately, it is no longer visible today.
Walking on the Solina Dam
Visiting the Solina Dam is a must-do during trips to the Bieszczady Mountains! Take a stroll along the promenade on the dam, which is over 660 meters long. From here, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the green hills above Lake Solina and an 80-meter abyss when you look in the other direction!

Visiting the Power Plant and Interior of the Dam

During the tour, you will first watch a film about the dam and power plant, and then, together with a guide, you will enter the power plant hall and the corridors inside the dam. You will even be in the part of the dam that is below the reservoir's bottom!
Visiting the Power Plant and Dam in Solina - Practical Information
- The tour is conducted in groups with a guide and lasts approximately 1 hour.
- During the tour, everyone must wear a protective helmet.
- Adults must have photo identification with them.
- Inside the dam, it is damp and cool (around 7 degrees Celsius) - it is advisable to wear sturdy footwear and warm clothing.
- There is no age limit for visitors, but it is worth considering whether younger children will be interested in such an attraction. Inside, it can be noisy (power plant hall) and dark (interior of the dam). There are many steep, damp, and slippery steps along the tour route.
- During the tour, filming, photography, and the use of mobile phones are not allowed.
