Visiting does not require a reservation, takes about 45 minutes, and involves walking approximately 500 m.
Despite its name, the main attraction here is not the presence of radioactive uranium (as, for example, in the Kowary Adit), but the incredible and almost unparalleled anywhere else in the world richness of chemical elements and minerals. It is because of them that the mine was already operating in the Middle Ages and is called the colourful cave.
The guide talks engagingly about the prehistory of the Śnieżnik Massif, the movements of tectonic plates (at one point we can stand at their boundary!), as well as the processes by which minerals form and their types and properties. Importantly, he answers the youngest visitors’ inquisitive questions in an engaging and humorous way. Naturally, we will also see a piece of uranium ore, but as the guide emphasises, this was a brief and darkest episode in the mine’s history.
Practical information: it is very cold (+7°C) and damp in the mine – it is worth dressing warmly and bringing waterproof footwear, and even wellington boots for children (there are puddles). Adults are required to wear helmets – for children, you can bring, for example, bicycle helmets or caps with visors – sometimes something drips from above, and it is easy to hit your head on protruding rocks.
The route is not accessible to prams, and using a child carrier backpack will also be problematic – some passages are narrow and low, so you have to bend down and could accidentally catch the carrier on or hit it against something. A front-wrapped sling should not be a problem.
Portable toilets are located near the car park. Parking is free (in a lay-by beside the road, right next to the mine, or, if there are no spaces, several dozen metres towards Kletno).
