The Skansen in Kolbuszowa is a vast and diverse ethnographic park. Here, you can take a walk among peasant homesteads, peek inside cottages, farm buildings, a mill, a village inn, a shop, and a fire station.
What to see in the Skansen in Kolbuszowa?
The skansen area is divided into two sectors: the forest sector and the Rzeszow sector. Before entering them, let's visit the museum exhibition in the first building, right by the entrance to the skansen. In the display cases, we can see selected exhibits and read interesting descriptions about the life of the local village residents, local traditions, and culture.
The forest sector includes, among other things, a picturesque manor house from Brzeziny - the oldest building in the skansen! In the manor garden, be sure to notice the unusual beehive, or rather, the whole apiary in one building:
In addition, the forest sector also includes a mill, a forge, windmills, beehives, shrines, a school, a rectory, and a wooden church of St. Mark:
The Rzeszow sector welcomes us with an interesting building of a Jewish inn, inside which there is a shop and a tavern run by Hersz Zellerkraut:
The further part of the Rzeszow sector is located behind the grove. It includes a forester's lodge, a fire station, and several farmsteads.
Visiting the Folk Culture Museum in Kolbuszowa - attractions
While exploring the skansen in Kolbuszowa, be sure to take a look inside the cottages! Although we rarely can enter inside, we can see a lot through the open doors and windows!
Equally interesting as the living rooms are the interior of the mill, shop, tavern, and numerous craft workshops, such as a wooden toy maker's workshop:
An important attraction of a visit to the skansen in Kolbuszowa is also the opportunity to take a walk amidst the greenery. In addition to historic buildings and homesteads, the ethnographic park area also includes vast meadows, a large wild pond, and even a small forest. Even during the summer season, you can find a peaceful place here for a family picnic.
The area is varied enough that you can find both plenty of sunshine and places where you can rest in the shade on a hot day (the grove by the pond).
Skansen in Kolbuszowa with children
If you are visiting the ethnographic park in Kolbuszowa with children, be sure to ask at the ticket office about outdoor games! Several themes and difficulty levels of tasks are prepared: "Around Maciej's Circle" (for preschoolers) and "Big Trouble, Leaky Rainy Hut" (pictured) and "A Piece of Bread Won't Fall from the Sky..." - for school-age children... and adults!
Although there are no prizes, certificates, etc., the puzzle map somehow organizes our visit, provides an interesting activity for the whole family, and serves as a souvenir from the skansen visit.
Visiting the skansen in Kolbuszowa - practical information
- There is a large free parking lot in front of the skansen. If you arrive in Kolbuszowa by bus or train, you will have to walk for almost an hour from the station (about 3.5 km).
- You can visit the skansen on your own (bring a map!), with a guide (by appointment), with an audio guide (player available for rent at the ticket office or download it from the website>>>), or with a guide in the form of a booklet (available for purchase at the ticket office). Descriptions of individual buildings can also be found online on the museum's website>>> (there are no descriptions on the buildings themselves).
- Toilets are available at the ticket office and within the skansen area, behind the old school building (there is also a changing table).
- There is a gift shop and a cafe called "Prowincja" (hot drinks, snacks, ice cream - please note that the cafe is open from April to October) at the ticket office.
- During summer weekends, additional outdoor events are often organized: tastings of regional dishes, demonstrations of craftsmen's work, craft stalls, performances by folk groups, workshops for children, etc.
- Moving around the skansen with a baby stroller should not be difficult: the roads are gravel but even and wide. The only problem may be getting onto narrow paths by the pond (they can be skipped) and entering the interiors of the cottages (high thresholds).
