The ruins of the Gothic castle in Rożnów, known as the Upper Castle or Zawisza Czarny's Castle, are located on a high slope above the Dunajec River, in a forest near the road to the water dam and power plant in Rożnów. Although there is not much to "explore" here, the place is picturesque and has a long history.

Upper Castle in Rożnów - Zawisza Czarny's Castle
The history of the castle in Rożnów dates back to the 13th century and a watchtower that belonged to the Gryf family, the owners of Rożnów and the surrounding area. In the second half of the 14th century, the watchtower was rebuilt into a Gothic knight's castle and in this form, it was given to the famous knight of King Władysław Jagiełło - Zawisza Czarny from Grabów.

The Fall of the Upper Castle in Rożnów
Zawisza Czarny did not enjoy the castle in Rożnów for long (it is not certain if he even managed to visit it), because he died in battle just 2 years after he took it over in 1426 as a pledge for debts. The castle went to his sons, and then to his granddaughter Barbara from Rożnów. It was her son, Hetman Jan Amor Tarnowski, who decided to build a new Renaissance defensive fortress, the so-called Lower Castle in Rożnów, instead of expanding the old castle. From then on, the abandoned fortress above the Dunajec began to fall into ruin.

Rebuilding the Castle in Rożnów - A Viewpoint?
Archaeological research has been ongoing for many years at the site of the Upper Castle ruins in Rożnów. There was once talk of creating a museum here, or even partially reconstructing the castle. The location of the ruins on a high slope above the Dunajec could certainly make it a wonderful viewpoint - for now, you have to look for a "window" between the trees.
