In the small town of Szczucin, in the MaƂopolskie region of southern Poland, there is one of the most interesting and least known technology museums in Poland: the Road Engineering Museum. It is the only museum of this kind in Poland, fully focused on the history of road building, bridges, and road machines. On a large outdoor area, you can see old road rollers, including a steam-powered roller, graders, crushers, and other impressive machines. You can also see reconstructions of different types of historic road surfaces.

  • You CAN touch the exhibits, and not only touch them. Young fans of construction machines can often climb into the cabins of many machines.
  • Free entry
  • Most exhibits are outdoors, with no roof and little shade on hot days.
  • There are toilets, including an accessible toilet for visitors with disabilities. There are no food places nearby.

Open-air exhibition of road machines

Outside the museum, there is an open-air exhibition of machines and equipment covering more than 2 hectares. You can find there:

  • road machines from the late 19th century, such as steam and diesel road rollers, tractors, crushers, and snow ploughs,
  • models of historic road surfaces, from ancient roads to modern asphalt,
  • real pieces of road infrastructure, such as road signs, curbs, culverts, and kilometer posts.

The open-air exhibition works like an educational walking route. Visitors can walk around and learn how road building developed over time.

History of the museum

The museum started in 1982 as a small memorial room collecting items connected with the work of road builders. Over the years, the collection grew. This led to the creation of a full museum, which was added to the register of monuments in 1992. Since 2005, the museum has been part of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, known in Poland as GDDKiA. Its official name is the Road Engineering History Unit, but most people still call it the Road Engineering Museum.
