Ever wondered how heavy the heaviest coin is? Or where you can hold a gold bar worth over half a million dollars? How about telling a real banknote from a fake one? Join us at the NBP Money Centre in Warsaw, and you're sure to have a great time!
You'll also learn how we produce money, get to know the history of money, and its role in the history of Poland and the world. This museum is wonderfully universal - it will appeal to both young and old. We recommend it when looking for attractions with children of different ages, as everyone will find something for themselves here, and what's more, admission is free!
History of Money
From antiquity to the present day - walking along the circular timeline, we will get to know the first means of payment used before coins became widespread, and then the first minted coins, including Polish ones - denars of Bolesław Chrobry. By looking into eight “knowledge wells”, we can delve into information about discoveries and trade routes and better understand economic changes.
Plate Coins
In the 'Monetary Systems' room, we can try to lift the enormous Swedish coins from the 17th century known as plätmynt - or plate coins. The largest of them weighs 20 kilograms! Their size and weight meant that their owners deposited them in the bank, which in return issued deposit certificates, which were the first banknotes in Europe.
Enter the Vault!
Before visiting the museum, we recommend a workout at the gym - here you will test your muscles by lifting a gold bar (this small bar weighs as much as 12 kg!). The vault is accessed through round vault doors with a clearly visible bolt lock mechanism.
Authenticity Laboratory
How to recognize a counterfeit banknote? At the exhibition, you will learn the secrets of security features used in banknotes and compare them under UV light with counterfeit banknotes. It's worth bringing your own wallet - in this room, you can check if your banknotes are authentic.
Money Maker
How is money - banknotes and coins - made? In a room that looks like a real production hall, you will learn about the process of creating banknotes and coins - artists' designs and sketches, including unrealized banknotes.
