The Dominican Museum is one of the newest museums in Krakow, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't have a long history! In January 2023, the monks opened their treasures to visitors for the first time. Oh yes, there is plenty to admire here!
Dominican Treasures - What Will We See at the Dominican Museum in Krakow?
First of all, you will find everything that traditionally fits our idea of treasures from a monastery, such as golden liturgical vessels and monstrances, medieval paintings, stained glass windows, sculptures, and antique books:
Many of the exhibits are related to the figure of St. Hyacinth, the founder, and the history of the order and the monastery. If you don't feel knowledgeable about these topics, it's best to start your visit in the room where a short film about the Krakow Dominicans and St. Hyacinth is shown - you will find it in the basement, near the exit of the exhibition.
After watching the film, you will benefit much more from exploring the museum and understanding the visit. You will be able to recognize St. Hyacinth and the "Hyacinth Mother of God" in the paintings:
Unusual Exhibits at the Dominican Museum
At the Dominican Museum, you will not only see exhibits related to religious worship. It turns out that the monks were also involved in astronomical research and the production of ceramic tiles.
Visiting the Dominican Museum with Children
The Dominican Museum in Krakow has not been specifically adapted for visiting with children. You will not find any special stations or attractions for children. However, this does not mean that you cannot bring them to the museum or that they will definitely be bored here.
What to Show Children at the Dominican Museum?
First of all, it is worth giving the youngest ones a special task that will make them want to observe selected exhibits instead of aimlessly wandering around. For example, try to spot animals in the paintings, sculptures, and other exhibits. Mythical creatures like dragons also count!
Also, make sure to stop by the statue of St. Nicholas. Do you remember the legend of how Bishop Nicholas gave three golden balls to poor girls so they could use them as dowries? How many balls do you see here? It seems that someone "fancied" one golden ball, which, as you can see, is actually made of wood...
