The Beluard in Rożnów, also known as the Lower Castle, is unique because it is one of the first modern defensive structures in Poland. Unfortunately, the fortress was never completed, and today we can only see 1 of the planned 4 bastions, a fragment of the walls, and a three-level gatehouse.

Renaissance Fortress in Rożnów by Commander J. A. Tarnowski

The construction of a modern fortress capable of withstanding artillery attacks was started by Grand Crown Hetman Jan Amor Tarnowski in the mid-16th century (around 1560). He was a well-educated Renaissance man and a military art theorist who led the Polish army from medieval to modern techniques and strategies. He also participated in wars and commanded the Polish army in conflicts like the Polish-Teutonic, Lithuanian-Muscovite, and Habsburg-Turkish wars. Perhaps his experiences are reflected in the sculpture of a nobleman holding a Turk's head in one of the bastion's corners?

Beluard - Bastion in Rożnów

Unfortunately, the construction of the five-sided fortress in Rożnów was halted by the hetman's death. Today, we can see one large five-sided bastion, called a beluard in French. From the outside, it might not look impressive, but take a look inside! The walls are about 4 meters thick, and the ceiling is 1 meter thick.

Gate to the Fortress - Lower Castle in Rożnów

The building with the entrance gate to the fortress was equally massive. It has 3 levels, and the gate itself was on the middle level, accessed by a drawbridge over the moat.

WARNING! The ruins of the Lower Castle in Rożnów are currently (spring 2025) in quite poor condition - you can enter the area, but at your own risk! Be sure to watch your step and do not climb on unsecured walls. The local authorities, who have taken over the care of the monument, plan to secure it properly and possibly "revitalize" it. For now, it's undeniable that visiting here offers a unique experience...
