Błędów Desert - the largest inland area of flying sand and dunes in Poland. Surrounded by forest, the Błędów Desert covers an area of approximately 33 km² (less than 10 km long and 4 km wide). It is a unique place that is worth visiting at any time of the year!
Trip to Błędów Desert
When you (temporarily!) have had enough of mountain climbing, walks in forests and parks, visiting castles and museums, a hike in the desert can be an interesting change. Although it is not a "sea of sand" that comes to mind when we hear the word "desert", the unlimited, open, and wild space is impressive!
How to Get to and Reach Błędów Desert
Błędów Desert is located between the towns of Błędów (to the west, in the neighboring Silesian Voivodeship), Klucze (to the east), and Chechło (to the north). It is surrounded by the Błędów Forests. The forested Biała Przemsza Valley separates the southern part of the desert - accessible to tourists - from the closed northern part (military training ground, no entry).
Błędów Desert - Wind Rose
This is the most popular, best-developed (...and most crowded) entrance to Błędów Desert.
The entrance is located on the road from Bolesław to the town of Klucze (about 1 km before Klucze, 5 km from Bolesław). The parking area is located about 200 m before the entrance to the desert. Here, you will find wooden walkways, benches, tables, gazebos, and sun loungers, as well as food trucks, portable toilets, and even an old anti-aircraft gun! The place is wheelchair accessible and suitable for disabled individuals.
Other Parking Areas near Błędów Desert
If you want to avoid the crowd and hustle, you can enter Błędów Desert from another side, for example, from the town of Klucze.
Czubatka in Klucze
Czubatka Hill (Klucze, Górna Street) is a viewpoint, but also a parking area from which you can reach the desert via a forest path (about 20 minutes). You can either follow the steep slope directly ("old yellow trail", a narrow path) or take a wider and gentler forest road that descends from the hill to the north.
When you reach the intersection of paths at the bottom of the forest road, you should turn left onto the cycling trail, and then turn right and walk through a birch grove to reach the sand dunes of the desert (few markings of the yellow trail).
Yellow Trail from Błędów
This will be a longer walk through the forest - about 1 hour from the Błędów School bus stop to the sand area. There is no designated parking area for tourists in Błędów.
Walking in Błędów Desert
The Błędów Desert is crossed by the yellow tourist trail Błędów - Klucze and a educational trail with information boards, but in reality, you can choose your own hiking route: you can walk and run wherever your eyes and legs take you! What a pleasant change from excursions where we cannot deviate from the designated trails and have to follow the route to avoid getting lost. Here, the entire area is open and visible "plain as day".
Błędów Desert - Attractions and Viewpoints
Sand, moon-like views, unlimited space for fun and exploration. Is there anything else?
You will also come across several nature information boards...
and wooden platforms:
In the area of the Wind Rose, you can find old anti-aircraft guns and military bunkers (southern part).
To see how large the desert is, it is best to visit the viewpoints: especially from Czubatka Hill at the eastern end of the desert in Klucze (the tower is not accessible to tourists, but the platform also offers a beautiful view):
Viewpoint Dąbrówka, Chechło
Another viewpoint to the desert is also located to the north - it is Dąbrówka in Chechło (Kluczewska Street). From here, you can see the closed military area of Błędów Desert. Unfortunately, you cannot enter the desert from here (no entry to the training ground). However, sometimes you can observe exercises, maneuvers, parachute jumps, or special military shows.
Błędów Desert - Practical Information
- Toi-toi toilets and seasonal food trucks at the Wind Rose (southern part of the desert).
- Parking areas and viewpoints: Wind Rose, Czubatka (Klucze, Górna Street), Dąbrówka (Chechło, Kluczewska Street; no entry to the desert)
- Public transport (PKS/BUS) access - Klucze (PKS, yellow trail about 40 minutes) or Błędów (Błędów School bus stop + yellow trail about 1 hour)
Błędów Desert with a Stroller?
It is possible, but only at the Wind Rose. It will be difficult to move with a stroller on the sand in other parts of the desert - unless it has very large wheels...
The Legend of How Błędów Desert Was Formed
How did Błędów Desert come into existence? Its formation is related to the silver treasures from the area...
How was the Błędów Desert created?
Curious about the origin of the Błędów Desert? Its sands are remnants of the Ice Age. However, there used to be... a dense forest here! ...
