Lucca - one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany

Lucca is a city in Italy located about 20 km from Pisa, in the region called Tuscany. Its uniqueness is owed to the defensive walls that surround the Old Town. The limited car traffic in the city center makes Lucca a very pedestrian-friendly city - both along the surrounding walls, where a tree-lined, wide pedestrian and bicycle path has been created, as well as through the narrow streets of the Old Town.

Exploring the Old Town of Lucca

Lucca is a city of cathedrals, church towers, and narrow streets. Instead of touring Lucca with a map in hand, I recommend getting happily lost in its labyrinth. There are more tourists near the main streets, but all you need to do is turn into a side corner to enjoy the tranquility and intimate atmosphere of the city.

The Labyrinth of the Minotaur - a symbol of Lucca

Fun Fact When visiting Italian churches, you will often come across the symbol of a labyrinth. In Lucca, you can find it on one of the columns at the entrance to the San Martino Cathedral. This is the labyrinth designed by Daedalus for the half-bull, half-human creature, the Minotaur.

Lucca - the defensive walls

The defensive walls surrounding Lucca are a 4 km promenade around the old town. Here, you will find shaded paths for walking, drinking fountains (along with bowls for your furry friends!), shaded playgrounds, bike rentals (including bikes for several people or families). Outside the walls, there is a moat.

When visiting Lucca at night, take a close look at the walls of buildings where lanterns are hung. You will surely encounter some cute lizards clinging to the walls. They are the friendly residents of Lucca.
