The Story of the Yellow Shoe

Wawrzynek, a poor village boy, loved to carve. One day, he was so engrossed in carving a figurine out of a piece of wood that he didn't notice the cow he was supposed to watch over had destroyed the crops in the priest's field.

Afraid of the consequences, the boy ran away. That's how he ended up in the city of Krakow, where his talent was noticed, and he was placed under the care of the famous master Wit Stwosz.

Even King Casimir Jagiellonian, who was impressed by the boy's talent, gave him a pair of yellow leather shoes as a gift. The famous altar for the Mariacki Church was being worked on at that time.

On the day of the altar's unveiling, it was noticed that one of the figures was missing a shepherd's crook. The boy climbed onto the altar to complete the missing part. That's when his yellow shoe slipped off his foot and fell behind the altar.

The shoe was found 400 years later during the restoration work of the altar in 1867.
