Legend - How the Sudetes and Mount Ślęża Were Formed

The Ślęża Massif, also jokingly called the "Silesian Olympus," stands out significantly among the surrounding flat areas. It was once even believed to be an extinct volcano! It is no wonder that it has been a place of worship and ancient legends for centuries.

Legend of the Formation of Ślęża and the Sudetes

According to legend, there used to be an entrance to hell in the vicinity of present-day Sobótka. The devils wanted to bury the entire land with stones and create mountains instead of fields and fertile lands. The work was supposed to be completed on the Midsummer Night. They were chiseling stones, but sometimes, just for fun, they would arrange boulders in precarious piles - thus the Sudetes were formed.

The Midsummer Night was approaching, and the mountains were not ready! In order to finish on time, they started quickly and haphazardly stacking the boulders. However, the angels figured out their cunning plan and decided to thwart the devils. A fierce battle broke out on the massive rocky blocks!

When the devils wanted to return to hell, they found the entrance buried under a pile of stones - that's the Ślęża Mountain. In anger, the devil stomped his hoof - thus the Tąpadła Pass was formed. However, he did not reveal the entrance to hell, and to this day, in his anger, he sends storms and lightning to Ślęża.
