New Attraction in Krakow - Dragons Everywhere!

Krakow is known to many children (and adults!) as the city of the Wawel Dragon. This legendary creature lived in a cave under Wawel Castle during the time of King Krak and is undoubtedly one of Krakow's main symbols. No wonder Krakow has embraced DRAGONS!

Friends? Family? Or maybe just lookalikes of the Wawel Dragon? Dragons have spread across Krakow, and while they don't breathe fire, they have an important task: to highlight the history of the places they visit, expanding interest in attractions beyond the city center.

"Dragon at Every Step" is an initiative by the city's residents - the project was submitted in the Civic Budget.

What dragons can we find on the Dragon Trail?

Dragon with a Kite in Jordan Park

At the main entrance to the park from the B艂onia side, you'll find a Dragon with a Kite - it probably overheard children saying this is one of their favorite play areas! The park was founded by Henryk Jordan, a pioneer of physical education known for establishing the first playgrounds for children in Poland.

Surveyor Dragon at al. Dembowskiego in Podg贸rze

Near Primary School No. 29 at al. Dembowskiego in Podg贸rze, a surveyor is taking measurements on the lawn. And it's not surprising - he has a theodolite, a helmet, and also... a dragon tail! The measurements are not random - the Krakow zero meridian runs through the school. In the past, a special geodetic mark was set up by Krakow astronomers in the 19th century to calibrate their telescopes. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in the early 20th century. The Surveyor Dragon has an important task - to preserve the memory of the meridian and the unique mark that was here! The dragon also points the way to Krak Mound.

Water Dragon at Plac na Groblach

Once, there was a pond and a Vistula port in the middle of what is now Plac na Groblach. The ponds and wetlands were gradually drained, and a "horse market" was organized on the resulting square. Although the ponds disappeared, water often flooded these areas - which is why the dragon is putting a fish, just pulled from the water, into its mouth.

Painter Dragon at Axentowicz Square

The dragon's artistic attributes refer to the patron of the square, Teodor Axentowicz - a Polish painter, draftsman, and graphic artist of Armenian descent, who was also a professor and rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. The artist was particularly fond of salon portraits - his models were elegant, stylishly dressed, beautiful, and capricious ladies. Axentowicz also painted portraits of children, often his own, frequently drawn in Zakopane, where he lived with his large family in his villa. Maybe you will pose for a portrait with the dragon-artist?

Bones of the Wawel Dragon Above the Doors of Wawel Cathedral

It's worth seeing the huge bones hanging at the entrance to Wawel Cathedral - they have been hanging there since the Middle Ages on a massive iron chain! No wonder they were considered the bones of the Wawel Dragon. According to superstition - if they fall, the Wawel Cathedral will collapse. How they got there and where they came from - no one really knows. Evidence of their existence can be found in writings from the 16th century! It was said they were pulled from the Wawel Dragon's cave.
