Tarnów is one of the most interesting cities in the Lesser Poland region (southern Poland). Its Market Square (Rynek), surrounded by historic townhouses, is considered one of the most beautiful in the country.

In the middle of the square stands the Town Hall (Ratusz). Long ago it was the seat of the city council. Its tall tower worked as a watchtower to spot fires and other dangers and to warn people.

The Leliwa coat of arms has been linked with Tarnów almost since the city was founded. You can see it even on the city's oldest seal, a special stamp once used to approve important documents.

Leliwa is a knightly coat of arms. The founder of Tarnów, a town below St. Martin's Hill (Góra św. Marcina), was Spycimir. He used the Leliwa coat of arms. The same design is still the city coat of arms today. It shows a golden crescent open upward on a blue shield, with a golden six-pointed star above it.

He was one of the most famous Polish military leaders. He fought in great battles and never hesitated to stand up for freedom, even for other nations. During the November Uprising he commanded Polish artillery, later became the commander-in-chief of the Hungarian Revolution, and even a marshal in the Ottoman (Turkish) army serving the sultan. He is a hero to three nations: Poles, Hungarians, and Turks.

He was born in Tarnów. The Bem family soon moved to Kraków, and Bem spent most of his life abroad, but he is still strongly linked with Tarnów. You can visit his mausoleum in Strzelecki Park, where he is buried.
