Silesia: 12 ideas for a hot day. Not only swimming areas and pools

Where to spend a hot day in Silesia?

When temperatures go above 30 degrees Celsius, many people look for a place to cool down by the water. But the Silesian Voivodeship in southern Poland offers much more than popular swimming areas. Cool caves, thick forests, historic mines, and scenic valleys are great places to escape the heat and discover interesting local attractions. Here are 12 places worth visiting on very hot days:

1. Sokole Góry and the ruins of Olsztyn Castle

The Sokole Góry nature reserve, near Częstochowa, is one of the most beautiful parts of the Polish Jurassic Highland. You will find many kilometers of forest paths with deep shade - perfect for spending the hottest hours of the day. The reserve is also known for its interesting rock formations. Be sure to bring your own food and water.

Plan your visit to the nearby ruins of Olsztyn Castle for the morning or evening. The area around the castle ruins is very sunny, but also very beautiful. Near the ruins and by the market square in Olsztyn, you will find restaurants, shops, and cafés.

2. Mount Zborów and Głęboka Cave

You will also find many kilometers of shaded forest trails around Mount Zborów. Another good way to cool down is to visit Głęboka Cave, located inside the nature reserve. It is one of the few caves in the Polish Jurassic Highland open to tourists. The temperature inside stays at about 8 degrees Celsius, so even during a heatwave you can enjoy cool air.

The top of Mount Zborów is a great place to watch the sunset.

4. Historic Guido Coal Mine in Zabrze

What makes Guido Mine special is the chance to go 320 meters underground - deeper than in any other tourist site in Europe! The tourist route passes mining machines, which the guide starts during the tour. You will see powerful coal cutters, belt conveyors, and chain conveyors. The sounds of working machines, the smell of metal and oil, the darkness, and the mine sounds create a very realistic atmosphere. A ride on a suspended mining railway is also part of the attraction.

Gliwice is one of the oldest and most interesting cities in Upper Silesia. Its pleasant market square with palm trees and cafés, the interesting palm house located close to the main railway station, and many other attractions made Gliwice very charming for us. The short distances between the railway station, the palm house, and the market square, plus many green areas, make the city nice for walking.

12. Water playgrounds

Modern and interesting water playgrounds are one of the special features of the Silesian urban area. Really, we have not seen so many anywhere else! They are a great alternative to swimming pools and bathing areas, especially for children who want to play with water. Some of the most interesting water playgrounds can be found in Tychy, by Lake Paprocany, in Jaworzno, in Gliwice near the palm house, and also in nearby Oświęcim. Oświęcim is in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, but it is easy to reach by Silesian regional trains. There is a nice water playground there, together with a mist park, by the boulevards along the Soła River.
