Discover the Amalfi Coast: Path of the Gods - Sentiero degli Dei
The Path of the Gods (or Sentiero degli Dei in Italian) is the most famous and popular trekking trail on the picturesque Amalfi Coast, considered one of the region's top attractions. The trekking route, which runs from Bomerano to Nocelle, is about 7 km long and offers unforgettable views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the island of Capri. Although the views are truly divine, the trail's name doesn't come from them! The name of the path refers to mythology - it is said that this is the path the Greek gods took to rescue Ulysses from the sirens.
- The Path of the Gods is a typical mountain trail - make sure to wear appropriate footwear.
- The trail doesn't pose major technical difficulties, but at times the narrow path runs close to the steep edge of a cliff - for this reason, we advise against choosing this trail for families with small children and people with a fear of heights.
- Most of the route is in the sun.
- It's best to tackle the trail from Agerola towards Nocelle - that way the best views are ahead of us.
Path of the Gods: How to get there?
Getting to the Path of the Gods by car can be a bit complicated, due to narrow streets and limited parking spaces on the Amalfi Coast.
The best solution is to take the local SITA bus, which departs from Amalfi. You can find the current timetable on the carrier's website - look for a bus stopping at the Agerola-Bomerano stop.
- Unfortunately, you can't buy tickets from the bus driver - you can purchase them either in the app or in Tabachi shops.
- When buying a ticket in the shop, state where you're going from and to - there are different zones and ticket prices.
- While waiting at the bus stop in Amalfi, stay alert - there are a lot of buses, and drivers often display the sign on the bus and let passengers on just before departure.
- It's a good idea to have spare return tickets as there may be problems buying them during siesta, many stops don't have any shops or vending machines.
- Buses from Nocelle to Positano are operated by another carrier, where you can buy tickets on the bus - just to be safe, it's better to have cash on hand.
Trail start: Agerola-Bomerano
The start of the Path of the Gods is in the town of Bomerano. The first kilometer of the route is actually the approach to the trail, it's not scenic, but still pleasant.
The further you go, the more picturesque it becomes. Our attention is drawn to the farm buildings incorporated into the almost vertical, rocky slopes - you can spot grazing goats here.
Choose your path
In the middle part of the trail, it forks - you can choose to go down or up. The lower part of the trail is more popular and scenic - we choose this one. You can also make a loop.
Breathtaking views
After the trail splits, the views become even more stunning. The cliffs of the Amalfi Coast and Positano in the distance are a sight you'll remember for a long time!
The Path of the Gods has a long history, dating back to ancient times. It was the only road along the coast that connected all the seaside towns and villages. This was the case until the State Road was built by the Bourbons to connect the entire area. The construction of the state road began in 1832 and ended with the inauguration on April 26, 1850.

We reach Nocelle
Towards the end of the route, as you approach Nocelle, the trail becomes more peaceful, but still offers beautiful views. Nocelle is a small, charming town that offers tranquility and picturesque landscapes.
Positano
From the town of Nocelle, you get the most beautiful view of the charming town of Positano, perched on steep cliffs - from above, you can see the cascading colorful houses.
Although there is the possibility of walking down to the town of Positano, many parts of the trail lead along the main street and you have to conquer about 1200 stairs! So it's best to take the bus.
Also consider whether you really want to go down to the town - the town of Positano itself looks most beautiful when viewed from above, from the trail. Buses do not go down to the town center but only go up to its upper part. To get down to the center and the beach, you still have to conquer a lot of stairs. Due to the large number of steps and significant height differences, walking around it is very physically demanding. Maybe instead of going down to Positano, you would prefer to return from Nocelle to Bomerano via the trail, this time going along the upper part of the trail?
